Privacy Policy
Squarelink AI (“Squarelink”, “we”) is an app that helps UC Berkeley students find people for shared activities. Each student has a personal AI agent that finds and negotiates matches on their behalf. This policy explains what we collect to do that, who can see it, and what you can do about it. It covers the Squarelink app and this website.
What we collect
Things you give us
- Your account. Your Berkeley email address, verified by a code we email you; the name you choose; a profile photo if you add one; the activity interests you pick; and, if you write any, your coordination goals.
- What you ask your agent. The messages you send your agent and its replies, and the activities it drafts from them.
- Activities. The Squares you create (title, category, time, place, photos), the ones you ask to join, and what you accept or decline.
- Messages. What you post in the group chat of a confirmed activity.
- Appreciations and reports. The thanks you send after an activity, and anything you tell us when you report another student.
Things from your device, with your permission
- Location, while the app is open. Used to suggest places near you and to show Squares nearby. We keep the places you choose for your activities; we do not keep a history of where your phone has been.
- Photos you choose. Only the ones you attach to a Square or your profile. The app uses the system photo picker and does not read your library.
The Squarelink app does not read your contacts or your calendar.
Things collected automatically
- Diagnostics. If the app crashes or runs slowly, a report with the device model, operating system, app version and what the app was doing is sent to our crash-reporting provider. Text and images in these reports are masked.
- Server logs. Our servers record each request with a request id and the network address it came from, for security and to fix problems.
How we use it
- To run the service: matching, agent negotiation, Squares and group chats.
- To keep Squarelink Berkeley-only and safe: verifying addresses, and acting on reports and blocks.
- To fix problems and keep the app working.
- To email you about your account, such as a sign-in code or an early-access invite.
We do not show advertising and we do not sell your information.
How AI is involved
Your agent is built on a third-party language model. When you write to your agent, or when it negotiates with another student’s agent, the text involved is sent to that provider (currently OpenAI) to be interpreted and answered. The provider processes it on our behalf and, under our agreement with them, does not use it to train their models. We also compute a numerical summary of what you asked for so it can be compared with Squares; this summary is stored with your request. Your agent’s conversations with other agents are kept so you can read them in the app.
Who can see what
- Inside a Square, other students see your request without your name.
- Your name is shown to everyone while a Square you host is open, to the people in an activity once both sides have confirmed it, and in that activity’s group chat.
- If you switch on Public profile in Settings, students in a Square you join can see your name.
- If you block someone, neither of you sees the other’s Squares or messages, and your agents will not match you.
- Our staff can access your information when needed to run the service, respond to a report, or fix a problem.
Who we share it with, and where it is kept
We use service providers to run Squarelink, and they process your information only for us: Render (servers and database), Cloudflare (photo storage), Resend (sending email), OpenAI (the language model behind your agent), Sentry (crash and performance reports) and Expo (delivering app updates). Your information is stored in the United States. We may also share information when the law requires it, or to protect the safety of our users. If Squarelink is ever acquired, your information would move with it under this policy.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Deleting your account in the app (Profile, Settings, Account & data) permanently removes your profile, requests, agent conversations, matches, goals, photos, the messages you sent, and your blocks and reports. Server logs are kept for 30 days, aggregated statistics for 90 days, and crash reports for the limited period our provider keeps them.
Your choices
- Turn location or photo access off at any time in your phone’s settings.
- Switch your public profile on or off, and block or report anyone, in the app.
- Export everything we hold about you from Settings, Account & data.
- Delete your account there too. No support ticket needed.
- Email us at any time about your information.
Who can use Squarelink
Squarelink is for UC Berkeley students aged 18 and over with a Berkeley email address. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18.
Security
Everything travels over encrypted connections, sign-ins use short-lived tokens, and access to our systems is limited to the people who need it. No method is perfect, so if you believe your account has been misused, tell us straight away.
Changes to this policy
If we change what we collect or how we use it, we will update this page and its date, and tell you in the app when the change matters.
